"Which type of solar system should I get?" is a fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends on two things: whether your site loses grid power often, and whether you want your solar system to keep running during an outage. Here's how the three common configurations actually differ in practice.
On-grid (grid-tied)
An on-grid system connects directly to the national grid through your DISCO's net meter, with no battery in the loop. During the day, your panels power your home directly, and any surplus is exported to the grid under the applicable net metering or net billing agreement.
The upside is cost — without a battery bank, on-grid systems are the cheapest way to install solar and have the fastest payback for daytime-heavy consumption. The downside is that on-grid inverters are required to shut down automatically during a grid outage as a safety measure (anti-islanding protection), so a straightforward on-grid system gives you zero backup during load shedding — you lose power exactly when the grid does.
Hybrid
A hybrid system is an on-grid system with a battery bank added, managed by a hybrid inverter that can draw from solar, grid, or battery depending on what's available and how it's configured. This is the most popular configuration for Pakistani homes right now, because it solves the two biggest pain points at once: it still exports/imports through the net meter for savings, but it also keeps your essential loads running through a load-shedding outage using stored battery power.
Hybrid systems cost more upfront because of the battery bank (commonly lithium these days, though lead-acid tubular batteries are still common on tighter budgets), but under the new 2026 net billing rules, they've become more attractive from a pure economics standpoint too — storing your midday surplus to use at night now often beats exporting it at the lower buyback rate.
Off-grid
An off-grid system has no connection to the national grid at all. Everything you use is either generated by your panels in real time or drawn from your battery bank, sized to carry you through the night and any low-sun days. This is the right choice for sites that either can't get a grid connection at all (remote plots, agricultural land) or want complete independence from both the grid and DISCO paperwork.
The tradeoff is that off-grid systems need a noticeably larger battery bank and typically a backup generator for extended cloudy stretches, since there's no grid to fall back on. That makes them the most expensive configuration per kW of usable capacity, and sizing has to be more conservative — you're planning for your worst realistic day, not your average one.
